How This Calculator Works
Every rate shown here is built from the actual minimum pay rates set out in the relevant modern Award, published by the Fair Work Commission, and updated to reflect the 1 July 2026 Annual Wage Review increase. We don’t estimate or round these figures, they’re calculated directly from the Award’s own base rate and penalty percentages.
The Three Numbers Behind Every Result
- Base rate — the minimum hourly rate for the selected classification level, set by the Award
- Age multiplier — for employees under 21, a percentage of the adult rate applies (this percentage differs by Award, which is why the same age can show a different rate under Restaurant vs Hospitality vs Retail vs Fast Food)
- Day-type multiplier — casual employees receive a loading (commonly 25% on weekdays), with higher penalty percentages on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays
Why the Numbers Sometimes Differ Between Awards
This is the detail most other calculators get wrong or oversimplify. Junior pay percentages, Sunday penalty rates, and even classification structures are not standardised across Awards, they’re each set independently by the Fair Work Commission for that specific industry. A 17-year-old’s junior rate under the Restaurant Award is not the same percentage as under the Hospitality or Fast Food Award. We built this calculator specifically to handle those differences correctly rather than applying one generic formula across every industry.

Is this calculator legally binding?
No. It’s an estimation tool to help you understand your likely minimum entitlement. For a legally authoritative answer, always cross-check with the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool or your specific modern award document.
Why don’t Retail Award junior discounts apply to every level?
Under the General Retail Industry Award, junior pay rates only apply to Levels 1-3. Employees classified at Level 4 or above are paid the full adult rate regardless of age, this is set out explicitly in the Award itself.
How often are these rates updated?
Award minimum rates are reviewed annually by the Fair Work Commission, with changes typically taking effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July. We update this calculator each year to reflect the new rates.
Does this cover allowances (uniforms, tools, travel)?
No, this calculator covers base, junior, and penalty rates only. Allowances are set separately in each Award and vary depending on your specific role and employer arrangements.
